Want to age gracefully?

Well, who doesn’t? But how? Good news for those who have been active in exercising. You know what, a team of researchers at Tel Aviv University has evidence that doing a regular exercising workout can stop muscles from degenerating. What it means is that if you do regular exercises, you will look younger and age gracefully. What the team found was that people who does low endurance exercise like jogging unwittingly unlocks the stem cells of their muscles which goes to rejuvenate old muscles. So far, the evidence comes from experiments with rats, but the researchers hope to unlock the secrets and to one day come up with a medicine that will revitalized old muscles. Great hope for the aged, but you will probably have to endure at least ten more years before such a medicine materializes.

Still, it is never too late to exercise. If you have neglected doing exercises during your golden years, then you might be on the better side by just starting off with slow relaxing exercises. But whatever you do, take care not to fall, otherwise you might break a bone which in the older ones will be more brittle. If active sports is not your food, then perhaps getting to learn the time tested Chinese Tai Chi Chuan or the Indian Yoga might put some extra years into your life. One of the more popular western regime is dancing. Get into old folks club and dance your way to good spirited life styles. It is never too old to dance, right?

One other thing that the researchers found on the rats was that when they were put on an exercising regime, the rats become easier to move about. This was evident in old rats which did not go through the workout regime which seldom move about. Now, it is not always possible for the older folks to go out and do exercises. Many are tied up in taking care of their grandchildren and some have diseases that does not encourage them to active. But now we know the importance of exercising, so probably we need to change our life styles, if only by exercising will lead us to go old gracefully. It is definitely pathetic to see old folks bedridden in hospitals when they can have a more meaningful life.
